PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Kamakhya temple is one of the main pithas (sacred place) among fifty-one Saktipithas and the temple is dedicated to Mother Goddess Kamakhya. Kamakhya is another form of Goddess Parvati. The Kamakhya temple is located on the Nilachal hill in western part of Guwahati city in Assam. The Development of Kamakhya Temple and Pilgrimage Destinations in and around Guwahati was sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism under the PRASHAD Scheme for overall development of the proposed sites around the Main temple complex in Guwahati, Assam. Development under this scheme is aimed towards easing the pilgrim movement to this highly revered religious centre. A multilevel car parking along with re-development of the ancient foottrack leading to the temple are amongst some of the important proposals being undertaken in this project. Creation of new infrastructure in a dense religious centre has been a major challenge coupled with the roles of multiple governing units , which was done with utmost care and sensitivity
